Keep Pets Safe During Heat Wave

In the heat of the summer months with rising temperatures and increased humidity, it is important to remember to keep our pets safe from the heat.  Follow these tips to help keep you and your pets safe and cool in the blazing heat.

Limit Exercise on Hot Days

Take care when exercising your pet. Be sure to adjust the intensity and duration of exercise according to the temperature.  If you normally walk or run in the afternoon, consider a morning or evening walk instead to keep your pet safe avoid the heat.

The pavement and asphalt get very hot and can burn your pet’s paws so walk on the grass.

Always carry water with you for your pet to prevent dehydration.

Provide Shade and Water

Any time your pet is outside, make sure they have protection from the sun and heat and plenty of fresh, cold water adding ice cube when possible.

Tree shade and tarps do not obstruct air flow. Dog houses stifle air and may make the heat worse with no circulation.

Never Leave Your Pets in a Parked Vehicle

Do not leave pets in a vehicle, ever.  Temperatures rise rapidly to dangerous levels in vehicles, even with the air conditioning running and the windows cracked.

Don’t Rely on a Fan

Pets respond to heat in a different manner than people. For instance, dogs sweat primarily through their feet and do not cool off as effectively as people. A fan may work for a person, but not as well for a pet.

In the dangerous, hot summer months it is important to watch out for people and to keep our pets safe from the heat.  You can also check with your local humane society https://www.hamiltonhumane.com/for recommendations.
